Two killed in plane crash near Grand Canyon

ROCK HILL, S.C. -- A plane that took off from Rock Hill on its way to Nevada has crashed near the Grand Canyon.

Coconino County Sheriff's air units located burned aircraft wreckage in the Kaibab area near the North Rim of the Grand Canyon Saturday.

According to local law enforcement, two men on the plane were found dead.

Ian Gregor, a communications manager for the FAA, tells NewsChannel 36 it was a single-engine Cirrus SR20 plane that departed from Rock Hill Airport-Bryant Field in South Carolina for Henderson, Nevada.

The pilot’s family reported the pilot missing when he didn't show up at the airport in Nevada Friday night.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the aircraft, a Cirrus SR20, was flying from Rock Hill Airport-Bryant Field in South Carolina to Henderson, Nevada, on Friday.

The pilot's family reported him missing when he failed to arrive in Henderson on Friday night.

The pilot did not communicate with air traffic controllers, and a review of radar data showed the plane disappeared over the Grand Canyon around 9 p.m. Friday, the FAA said.

Blair declined to immediately release the names of the two fliers.
