Israeli TV station reports 4th attack in south

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on an Israeli bus near the Egyptian border today that was heading to the southern resort city of Eilat, wounding at least five people, the army said. Two gunmen were killed, Army Radio said.

Helicopters and ambulances arrived at the site and were treating the wounded, who were in light to moderate condition, said Zaki Heller, a spokesman for the Magen David Adom emergency services. Yoseftal Medical Center in Eilat reported that nine people were being treated.

Army Radio said three people traveling in a car opened fire on the bus. The radio said there was a second shooting at another bus and a third incident in which a car went up in flames. The report said that at least one person was killed in that violence. An army spokeswoman, speaking anonymously according to regulation, said the military was checking the reports.

A woman who asked not to be identified told Army Radio that shots were fired at the car in which she was travelling with her family and that two of her children were injured by shattered glass.

The military says assailants have carried out three consecutive attacks in southern Israel near the Egyptian border, killing and wounding a number of people.
The attacks on Thursday targeted a passenger bus, a private car and a group of soldiers. The number of dead and wounded was not immediately known.
Military spokesman Brig.-Gen. Yoav Mordechai says Israeli security forces tracked down some of the assailants and exchanged fire with them. He says the attackers used heavy weapons, possibly mortars or anti-tank weapons, and explosive devices during the attacks.
