PHOENIX, Az.-- Hundreds of US Airways flights were grounded and thousands of passengers were stranded Friday after a system outage knocked out power to airport computers, airline officials said.
Preliminary reports indicated that US Airways' computer system, including their website, usairways.com, crashed Friday afternoon as a result of a power outage near one of the airline's data centers in Phoenix.
A company spokesperson said the system was partially restored by 5:30 p.m. and fully restored shortly after 6 p.m. Pacific Standard Time.
The Tempe, Ariz-based carrier cited a power outage near one of the airline's data centers in Phoenix as a possible cause.
By 8:45 p.m., some airport computer systems were coming back online, "and we are working to restore operational order," the airline said.
US Airways officials couldn't immediately say how many flights or passengers were affected.
Airline spokeswoman Tina Swail didn't have any information on when the outage occurred or what caused it or when the problem would be completely resolved.
Officials at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport say the power outage happened mid-afternoon, and passengers couldn't make reservations, check in online, change their flights or check flight status.
Customers were encouraged to check their flight status before arriving at an airport by calling US Airways reservations at 800-428-4322.
